Ramble and Roar: A 1920s Novel

I feel like swinging from a chandelier. Too bad I don’t have one of those handy.

No worries, today is the official release of my 1920s novel, Ramble and Roar! It’s been a crazy journey in making this book. It started as an idea in 2008, and now it’s 2018 and available to buy. Over the last ten years, I’ve researched the roaring 20s, moved three different times, had two children, started a hobby farm, wrote several drafts, and started my publishing company. (And that’s just some of it). There were times when I wondered if I ever would get this book into a tangible form. I dreamed of the day when I’d hold it in my hand, smell the pages fresh off the press, and clasp it to my heart, thanking God.

Most of the time, dreams only happen in our sleep. When we open our eyes, the dream ends and reality begins again. But once in a while, our most delightful dreams do become our reality. Today, I’m fully awake and this dream is real.

I’m 33 years old and releasing my debut historical fiction novel, Ramble and Roar. It’s an adventurous story about a debutante-turned-flapper named Eliza Belcourt who travels to New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a famous jazz singer. But her sparkling dream comes with a price, and the Irish mob is ready to collect. As Eliza grasps for success and love, she finds that her city of bright promise might offer only dazzling lies.

Ramble and Roar is an honest, daring story that captures the pleasure–seeking decade of the 1920s in all its glory and grit. This story was a fun challenge for me to write. It took years of research in order to capture it accurately, but I’m pleased to finally share it.

Now, all that’s left to do is to continue dreaming of the next adventure.

The Magic Snow Globe: A Children’s Book

I’ve dreamed of this day since I was 10. I’m not fibbing. I have wanted to publish a book for that long! And today, that dream is a reality.

The Magic Snow Globe is my debut. It’s a children’s book about twins, Willow and Wendell Potter, who purchase a special snow globe from an antique store. At night, the globe lights up and transports them to magical lands where they learn the real secret to Christmas magic.

Not only did I write the book, but I also illustrated it. I worked hard to capture the scenes that were in my mind. Each drawing was painted using watercolor and acrylic. My mother, Cindy Overbeek, an experienced painter, helped me with the painting so that each image would pop.

I desire for this book is to inspire wonder and imagination. Oh that we would set down our iPhones and get lost in a book again. Let the pictures speak to us and the words whisk us away.

I hope The Magic Snow Globe would help you dream up your own magical lands and the wonders of Christmas.

If you would like to purchase this book, it is available on amazon.com as a paperback and Ebook. (Click the highlighted text to be taken to the page)

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Flywheel Books: My Publishing Label and Why I Chose This Business Name

I have many books inside of me that are bursting to be shared. Finally, I am able to do that. Presenting my new Indie Publishing Company… Flywheel Books.

You might wonder why I chose this name. I’m glad you wondered. There is a reason.

Flywheel Books is a spin-off from my husband, Jonathan’s music label.  When it came time to produce his first record, he needed to create his brand. That night in a dream the phrase, “Flywheel Music” came to him.

A Flywheel is a heavy revolving wheel in a machine (connected to the engine) that is used to increase the machine’s momentum and thereby provide greater stability or a reserve of available power during interruptions in the delivery of power to the machine. (Oxford Dictionary and my paraphrasing)

So what does that have to do with Jonathan and I?

We believe that Jesus is the flywheel inside of us. He gives us momentum to move. He gives us stability. And when our reserve is low, He powers us. We can’t do life or art apart from Him. He’s at the center of all we do.

Thank you for following me on this writing journey. The first release from Flywheel Books will be on November 7th. It’s a children’s picture book called, The Magic Snow Globe. In this Christmas adventure, you can travel with twins, Willow and Wendell Potter to magical lands, from snow fairies to toy soldiers, that will reveal the secret to real Christmas magic.
